Eskimos jumping on whale leather., They’re celebrating the end of the whaling season; this photo was taken by LIFE magazine staff photographer Ralph Crane on 1 Jan 1965. It’s mostly a celebratory tradition now but it used to have a practical purpose during earlier times. Launching themselves up in the air allowed the hunters to see farther across the sea ice and spot prey animals easier.
