Cirrus Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds, also known as billow clouds, are caused by atmospheric instability. When two different layers of air are moving at different speeds, it will sometimes form a wave structure in which precipitation can become trapped. This phenomenon can manifest in clouds, water, the Sun’s corona, Saturn’s bands, and Jupiter’s Red Spot.
